Two Iranian border guards killed in clashes with Kurdish rebel groups: Security

Iranian authorities announced on Wednesday that two border guards were killed in clashes with ‘terrorist groups,’ in Iranian Kurdistan (Rojhilat).

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Iranian authorities announced on Wednesday that two border guards were killed in clashes with ‘terrorist groups,’ in Iranian Kurdistan (Rojhilat).

The gunfire took place on Tuesday at 10:00 pm local time in Kani Sev outside the city of Sardasht, an area near the border with the Kurdistan Region.

A statement said that First Lieutenant Yousef Piraneh and Warrant Officer Mahboub Qorbani were killed during an attack by ‘terrorist groups.’

Tehran views various Kurdish rebel groups opposing the Iranian government or its policies to be terrorist organizations.

So far, no Kurdish group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Sardasht is a predominantly Kurdish city located at the border with the Kurdistan Region. Kurdish rebel groups have frequently targeted Iranian security in the region over the past year.

Also on Wednesday, the Turkish military announced its warplanes had pounded several positions in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, killing six fighters of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), a Kurdish rebel group engaged in a decades-long insurgency with Ankara.
