Committee formed to set referendum date, reactivate Kurdistan Parliament

The KDP would discuss the PUK’s roadmap to resolve the political deadlock in the Kurdistan Region and prepare a response at the next gathering.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan24) – The Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) on Sunday held a meeting in Erbil to discuss the process of holding an independence referendum and reactivate the Kurdistan Parliament.

The Kurdistan Region President Masoud Barzani chaired a meeting between the political bureaus of the KDP and PUK in the town of Pirmam, in Erbil, the capital of the Kurdistan Region.

The members discussed the formation of a committee to set a date for the independence referendum and the mechanisms required to reactivate parliament.

Following the meeting, the KDP and PUK released a statement emphasizing that several topics were discussed during the series of joint meetings.

According to the statement, the members discussed three main points including both parties’ efforts to resolve the crises facing the Kurdistan Region.

They also expressed support for government institutions that would improve the livelihood of the people of Kurdistan.

The parties emphasized on priorities agreed upon in the previous meetings, including the formation of a special committee for the referendum process and setting a date to hold the referendum.

The steps needed to reactivate the Kurdistan Parliament to best serve the referendum process were also addressed, according to the statement.

The report concluded that the KDP would discuss the PUK’s roadmap to resolve the political deadlock in the Kurdistan Region and prepare a response at the next gathering.

In a meeting on April 2, the Region’s two main ruling parties agreed to hold an independence referendum in Kurdistan.
