Erbil announces arrest of 16 suspects in New Year's Eve attack on tourists

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Police forces in Kurdistan Region's Erbil province announced on Sunday they had detained 16 suspects charged with attacking tourists in front of the Family Mall complex.

The police called on the victims of the attacks to visit the provincial police directorate to aid the investigations, affirming that the perpetrators will be brought to justice.

The Erbil Police Directorate statement said that “the security forces and the police arrested 16 assailants according to Articles 477 and 413 of the Penal Code." It added, "anyone who was harmed in this incident can visit the Erbil Governorate Police Directorate to take legal action."

Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani on Saturday “strongly denounced” the assaults on tourists from southern Iraqi provinces who came to the autonomous region for the New Year’s holidays.

The Erbil Police Directorate also stated that "anyone who commits a crime will not escape the law and will face justice."
