Erdogan says Turkey ready to import Iraqi natural gas

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan stated on Friday that Ankara could import natural gas from Iraq.

“Turkey may be supplied with gas from Iraq,” Erdogan told Turkish journalists on a flight back from the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv. “However, I stress again that we do not face a problem with natural gas at the moment.”

The Turkish president said he had recently discussed the possibility of importing Iraqi natural gas with Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani.

The Kurdish president had assured Erdogan he would broach the issue federal government of Iraq, the Turkish official stated.

Erdogan has also talked to the Turkish press about the possibility of using Israeli natural gas in Turkey and exporting it to Europe.

“We are ready to use the Israeli natural gas inside Turkey and to cooperate” on exporting it to Europe, Erdogan revealed. “I’m going to discuss this issue with the Israeli president who is going to visit Ankara in March.”

“Transporting Middle-East’s natural gas to Europe can’t be successful without having it go through the Turkish territories,” he added.
