The ninth cabinet of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) is prioritizing renewable and clean energy with various planned projects across the Kurdistan Region.

“There are many different subgroups of clean energy including solar energy, wind energy, and biofuels,” read the KRG’s 2022 green investment guide. “The growing interest in clean technology energy stems from the growing realization that costs can drop dramatically if energy efficiency is addressed.”

Energy experts believe that the Kurdistan Region has the potential to become a pioneer in the production of clean energy.

“Kurdistan has strong wind, plenty of sun, and good water resources,” said Rabar Hassan, a local energy expert. “If these resources are developed, Kurdistan can become a future pioneer in clean energy production.”

“Kurdistan is thinking right for taking steps towards the clean energy production,” he added. “In less than a decade, the whole world will be in the era of clean energy production, so now is the right time to plan and take actions.”

KRG plans to construct several solar power plants. Each plant will be capable of producing at least 250 megawatts of electricity.

In addition to these projects, the KRG strives to develop the biomass energy sector, according to its 2022 green investment vision. It has plans to establish several bio power generating stations across the Kurdistan Region.

“We need to attract international investors to come here and invest in all these clean energy projects,” Hassan said.

“Kurdistan has an attractive investment law, but we need to do more to convince companies to come here.”
