14 people dead in Soran district fire

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – 14 people died after a fire broke out in a building in the Soran district of Erbil on Friday night.

Kamran Mullah Muhammed, the Director General of Health in Soran, told Kurdistan 24 that 10 men and four women died in the fire and several others were taken to hospital for treatment and are under intensive medical care. 

After the fire, the cause of which is still unknown, civil defense, emergency, and security teams arrived at the scene to control the fire and rescue residents in the building.

Meanwhile, Rawand Maghdid, spokesperson of Soran Civil Defense, told Kurdistan 24 that six firefighters suffered from asphyxiation as a result of the fire's smoke.

It was reported by other Kurdish news agencies that the building was a university dormitory, but a Kurdistan 24 correspondent refuted this information.
