PM Barzani receives newly inaugurated Greek consul general to Erbil
ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani on Monday received the newly inaugurated Greek Consul General Nikolaos Stergioulas in Erbil, according to a statement.
Prime Minister Barzani congratulated Consul General Stergioulas on his new post, wishing him success in his endeavor, according to a statement from the premier’s office.
Barzani expressed his government’s readiness for any necessary cooperation and coordination with the diplomatic mission.
The new diplomat reiterated Athens’ willingness to further develop ties with the Kurdistan Region, particularly in culture, trade, and agriculture, per the statement.
Consul General Stergioulas has replaced his predecessor Stavros Kyrimis.
The premier in June 2021 visited Athens and met with the country’s top officials, including Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
As of 2017, Greece's investment in the Kurdistan Region was about €2 billion. The Greek government has supported the KRG with humanitarian aid, as well as the Peshmerga in the fight against ISIS with arms and ammunition.
