“It is with great sadness that we received news of the death of His Highness Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, Emir of the State of Kuwait," Prime Minister Barzani wrote.

Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) President Masoud Barzani on Monday visited the Kuwait Consulate General in Erbil to extend his condolences over the passing of the monarch.

The Kuwaiti emir was admitted to hospital in late November, the court announced at the time, citing an “emergency health problem” without elaborating further on the condition.

The late ruler reportedly visited the US in March 2021 for medical checks.

Sheikh Nawaf was sworn in as emir after his half-brother, the late Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Sabah, passed away at the age of 91.

Before his role as the country’s emir, Al-Sabah was Kuwait’s minister of defense from Jan. 1988 until the country’s liberation from Iraq after the conclusion of the Gulf War in 1991.
