PM Barzani sends condolences to Japan earthquake victims

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani on Wednesday expressed his condolences to the families of Japan's recent earthquake in a post on X.

“I am deeply saddened by the tragic loss of lives in yesterday’s earthquake in Japan. My thoughts are with the country’s people and leadership in this difficult time,” Prime Minister Barzani said.

“Japan has been a strong friend and partner of the Kurdistan Region and we stand in full solidarity with them,” he added.

At 4:10 p.m. JST on the first day of 2024, an earthquake measuring at a magnitude of 7.6 struck 7 kilometers northwest of Suzu, on the Noto Peninsula of Ishikawa Prefecture.

According to the latest figures, at least 55 people have been killed by the earthquake, and many others are believed to be trapped under the rubble of collapsed buildings.

The town of Wajima, some 500 kilometers from Tokyo, of about 27,000 people was near the epicenter of the earthquake and was particularly devastated in the natural disaster. 

The following day, an aircraft crash occurred at Tokyo's Haneda airport between a passenger airliner and a Japanese Coast Guard plane, which was en route to deliver aid to victims of the earthquake. Five crew members of the Coast Guard were killed in the accident.
