Three political parties form alliance for upcoming elections

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – On Thursday, Mohammed Haji Mahmoud, the head of Kurdistan Social Democratic Party, in a press conference announced that they have entered into an alliance with both the Kurdistan Communist Party – Iraq and Kurdistan’s Toilers’ Party.

The alliance comes after the three political parties started their preparations for the upcoming parliamentary elections in the Kurdistan Region, scheduled on June 10.

“The alliance between Kurdistan Social Democratic Party, Kurdistan Communist Party – Iraq and Kurdistan’s Toilers’ Party shall enter the elections under the name of ‘Kurdistan Region Alliance’.”

The alliance will be head by Mohammed Haji Mahmoud.

Earlier, political parties like Democratic National Union of Kurdistan, Kurdistan Conservative Party, and Kurdistan Workers Party announced the creation of “Sardem Alliance'' (The Alliance of the Era), and Abdullah Haji Mahmoud as its political head.

Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani signed a decree setting the date, June 10, for the upcoming parliamentary elections, according to a readout from the Kurdistan Region Presidency.

“In accordance with the second paragraph of Article 10 of the Presidency Law No. 1 of 2005, as amended, President Nechirvan Barzani has decided that the general elections for the sixth term of the Kurdistan Parliament will take place on June 10th, 2024,” the statement read.  

Based on the Federal Supreme Court ruling of Feb. 21, the Kurdistan Region’s Parliamentary Election will be conducted based on a multi-constituency system; there will be four constituency centers: Erbil, Sulaimani, Dohuk, and Halabja.

The total parliamentary seats are 100; Erbil (34) seats; Sulaimani (38) seats; Dohuk (25) seats; Halabja (3) seats.

On Feb. 21, the Federal Supreme Court of Iraq ruled to decrease the Kurdistan Region parliament seats from 111 to 100. Those eleven seats were dedicated to Kurdistan Region minorities.

Every four years, Kurdistan Region parliamentary elections are held to elect the 111 members. The election was first held in 1992 and the most recent election was held in 2018.

Dawid Salman, the Director of the Iraqi Independent High Electoral Commission, previously told Kurdistan24 that there are 3.6 million eligible voters in the Kurdistan Region.
