ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – Peshawa Hawramani, the spokesman for the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), on Friday in a statement emphasized the importance of the rule of law and an impartial constitutional court and said that “Iraq does not currently have a constitutional court as stated in the constitution. Consequently, the existing court [Iraqi Federal Supreme Court] is considered unconstitutional, rendering its decisions illegal and unconstitutional.”

“Those in Kurdistan who support this court because it acts in their interest and makes unconstitutional decisions. However, the Kurdish people need to understand that these individuals who act against their constitutional rights are not concerned about the losses incurred,” Hawramani added.

He also said that because this court has consistently ruled in their favor and against the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), it is “imperative for the esteemed people of Kurdistan to adopt a strong and resolute position against those who betray their cause.”

As per Article 36 of the Kurdistan Parliamentary Election Law, five seats were reserved for Chaldeans, and Assyrians, one for Armenians and five for Turkmens, but the Federal Supreme Court of Iraq annulled the 11 seats on Feb. 21.

Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani on March 3, set June 10 for parliamentary elections.

Every four years, Kurdistan Region parliamentary elections are held to elect the 111 members. The election was first held in 1992 and the most recent election was held in 2018.

Dawid Salman, the Director of the Iraqi Independent High Electoral Commission, previously told Kurdistan24 that there are 3.6 million eligible voters in the Kurdistan Region.
