ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan24) – The American Islamic State (IS) fighter who surrendered to Peshmerga forces traveled from Turkey to Syria in December 2015, according to the Kurdistan Region Security Council (KRSC) statement on Wednesday.

KRSC released a statement revealing that on March 14, 2016, Mohamad Jamal Khweis, a 26-year-old US citizen from the State of Virginia, was apprehended by Peshmerga forces near Sinjar (Shingal) for attempting to enter the Kurdistan Region from the IS stronghold of Mosul in northern Iraq.

Khweis traveled to Syria accompanied by a young Iraqi woman and arrived in late January but fled sometime afterward to return to the US. 

According to KRSC, Kurdish authorities are in constant contact with US counterparts regarding this situation.
