Hungary to send Peshmerga more military aid

Hungary has sent 275 tons of military aid to Peshmerga and will send more weapons and ammunitions.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan24) – Hungary has sent 275 tons of military aid to Peshmerga and will send more weapons and ammunitions, said the Hungarian Consul General in Erbil Csaba Vezekényi on Sunday.

In a press conference held in the capital of the Kurdistan Region, Erbil, Vezekényi told the Governor of Halabja Province Abdulla Mohamad that Hungary has previously provided military support to the Kurdistan Region in the fight against jihadists.

“Hungary has so far provided 275 tons of weapons and ammunition to the Peshmerga forces in the fight against the Islamic State (IS), and 110 more types of advanced weapons will be sent to them,” Vezekényi stated.

He also mentioned that all the aid has been sent directly to the Kurdistan Region, and the future military support will also be delivered directly to the Region, not through the federal Government of Iraq.

“Our military advisers continue to train Peshmerga,” he added. “Our special military hospitals are treating Peshmerga, four of whom have already returned to Kurdistan.”

The press conference followed a meeting that discussed economic development in Halabja. “We asked for some help from the Hungarian Consulate General to provide economic support to Halabja and encourage Hungarian companies and organizations to participate in the economic development of the Province,” Mohamad said.

Additionally, Mohamad stated that two main points were discussed in the meeting.

“First, we asked for help in providing medical treatment to the victims of the gas attack on Halabja (chemical attack by the former dictator of Iraq on Halabja in 1988), as we keep asking the humanitarian organizations too.”

Regarding the second point, Mohamad noted, "We asked Hungary to help find the missing people of Halabja. Many who escaped the Halabja chemical attack were lost in the neighboring countries.”

He mentioned that Vezekényi promises that he will deliver Halabja's demand and message to the Hungarian government and organizations.
