ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – Following the success of Runaki Project in Erbil, the initiative to provide 24-hour electricity is now being expanded to Duhok.

Officials have confirmed that preparations for the project have commenced in central Duhok, with plans to extend to the surrounding areas in the near future.

Runaki Project Expands to Duhok

On Friday, Hazim Mohammed Osman, Deputy General Director of Duhok Electricity, told Kurdistan24 that the project had been successfully implemented in Erbil and would now be rolled out in Duhok Governorate.

“Runaki Project was initially implemented in Erbil with significant success, and the project is now scheduled to be implemented in Duhok in the near future,” Osman stated.

He noted that across Duhok Governorate, there are 350,000 electricity subscribers, all of whom will benefit from the project once it is fully operational.

Integration with the Runaki Project

Runaki project is an ambitious initiative launched by Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani on Oct. 17, 2024, to provide uninterrupted electricity across the Kurdistan Region.

During his visit to Shadi neighborhood in Erbil, where the pilot phase was conducted, Barzani expressed satisfaction with its success.

“Three months ago, the Shadi neighborhood was selected for the experimental phase of this project. I visited several households and employers, and they were delighted with the provision of 24-hour electricity,” Barzani stated.

Following the pilot phase, the project was expanded to additional neighborhoods in Erbil, including Bahari Nwe, Naznaz, Bakhtiari, and Sarbasti, benefiting 22,000 subscribers. Subsequent expansions increased this number to 50,000 subscribers.

Gradual Implementation in Phases

According to the Duhok Electricity Directorate, the first phase of Runaki Project will focus on central Duhok, where initial preparations have already begun.

The second phase will see its expansion to surrounding towns and districts to ensure uninterrupted power supply across the entire governorate.

The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has announced that similar technical work has already begun in Sulaimani and Duhok, with additional neighborhoods set to receive 24-hour electricity in the coming weeks.

The Road Ahead: What’s Next?

With Duhok now in the early stages of the project, authorities are working on the necessary infrastructure upgrades to accommodate the increased electricity supply. Engineers and technicians are focusing on:

1- Strengthening the existing power grid
2- Upgrading substations and distribution networks
3- Ensuring adequate power generation to meet growing demand

KRG Minister of Electricity Kamal Mohammed has stated that by the end of 2026, all Kurdistan Region residents will have access to 24-hour electricity under the Runaki project.
