Bahçeli Contacts Demirtaş, Expresses Appreciation for His Support

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – Turkish Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) leader Devlet Bahçeli has reached out to former Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) co-chair Selahattin Demirtaş, currently imprisoned in Turkey, to express his gratitude and appreciation, according to Turkish media reports.
A Rare Gesture Amid Political Tensions
HaberTürk reported on Sunday, that Bahçeli personally called Demirtaş to thank him for his support in advancing the peace process between the Turkish government and the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).
This development follows a historic statement by PKK founder Abdullah Öcalan on Feb. 27, 2025, in which he urged the organization to disarm and dissolve itself.

PKK Declares Ceasefire Following Öcalan’s Call
Responding to Öcalan’s call, the PKK declared a ceasefire with Turkey on Saturday. The party’s executive committee described the successful implementation of Öcalan’s message as “crucial” and acknowledged the beginning of a “new historical process” in Kurdistan and the Middle East.

Erdogan Describes the Moment as a ‘Historic Opportunity’
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan welcomed Öcalan’s statement, calling it a “historic opportunity” for Turkey’s future. He reiterated that the government’s priority remains ensuring national unity and preventing any threats to the country’s stability.
