ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – The Ministry of Electricity in the Kurdistan Region affirmed that its ongoing Runaki Project has reached an advanced stage of implementation, now providing uninterrupted 24-hour electricity to more than 415,000 citizens across the Region. Officials say the initiative remains on track to cover the entire Kurdistan Region by the end of 2026.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the Ministry noted that the project is still expanding and currently encompasses 35 key neighborhoods across multiple cities, with nearly 600 private generators being decommissioned as a result of the reliable public power supply.

"The efforts will continue until we can bring 24-hour electricity to every home in Kurdistan," the Ministry declared, reaffirming the government’s commitment to equitable energy access.

The Runaki Project, first launched in Erbil, has now been implemented in multiple districts of Sulaimani and Duhok, with plans underway to expand to Halabja in the coming phases.

In Erbil, the neighborhoods now receiving 24-hour electricity include Tayrawa, Mistoofi, Kurani Ankawa, Ankawa, Salahaddin, Minara, Zanari, Ta’ajil, Araban, Shadi, New Bahari, Naznaz, Bakhtyari, Sarbasti, Koran, Kurdistan, Majidawa, Rizgari, Bahar, Krekarn, Azadi, Rasti, Nishtiman, Raparin, Newroz, and Mardin.

In Sulaimani, the project has reached Ibrahim Pasha, Sabunkaran, Darwgha, Haji Khan, Orzy Street, Salim Beg, and Khanaqah neighborhoods. Meanwhile, Duhok’s Baroshki and Sarheldan neighborhoods are also now beneficiaries.

The Ministry emphasized that this power reform initiative is among the most strategic public service projects spearheaded by the ninth cabinet of the Kurdistan Regional Government. The long-term vision behind the Runaki Project is to eliminate reliance on private generators, reduce energy costs for citizens, and enhance the environmental and service infrastructure of the Region.

On October 17, 2024, Prime Minister Masrour Barzani officially inaugurated the Runaki Project during a visit to Shadi neighborhood in Erbil, describing it as a cornerstone in the government's plan to secure a stable, round-the-clock electricity supply for all parts of the Kurdistan Region.

With continued investment and phased expansion, the KRG is steadily moving toward an energy-secure future, where 24-hour electricity is not a luxury, but a basic standard for every home.
