VIDEO: Iran, weak Iraq government obstacle for Kurdish independence

WASHINGTON DC, United States (Kurdistan24) – Iran is a key player with regards to Kurdistan’s independence and is opposed to the breakup of Iraq, according to an American author and journalist.

Roy Gutman, an American author and journalist, spoke to Kurdistan24 about Kurdish aspirations for independence and the new US administration’s policies under President-elect Donald Trump.

Gutman addressed Kurdistan’s desire for independence and said it might not be “realistic” because of the different influences in the region.

The American author pointed to the major powers surrounding the Kurdistan Region, specifically Iran.

He explained the Iranian government was opposed to the splitting of Iraq and, as a result, would deny Kurdistan its independence.

Moreover, Gutman addressed the “weak” central government in Iraq and explained this contributed to Iran’s influence regarding Kurdish sovereignty.

“The key player here is Iran, and Iran is completely opposed to the breakup of Iraq,” he said.

“You live in a very tough neighborhood in Kurdistan, and you have major powers surrounding you, and then you have a very weak central government in Iraq,” Gutman continued.

Additionally, the journalist addressed the US’ possible foreign policy under the administration of President-elect Trump.

Gutman stated Trump had “contradictory” views regarding the war in Syria and the US’ relationship with Turkey.

He explained Trump planned to side with Russia in Damascus, but he urged the President-elect to pay attention to what the people of Syria wanted rather than the government.

Regarding the US’ relations with Turkey, Gutman stated Trump was for improving affairs with Ankara because the President-elect believed they were a “close and reliable” ally.
