ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani on Friday welcomed the killing of the ISIS leader in Syria and reiterated the autonomous region’s commitment to the fight against the terror group.

“The killing of Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurayshi is a major blow to ISIS leadership and an act of justice for the victims of the terrorist group’s crimes,” President Barzani tweeted.

“We reiterate our commitment to fight and eliminate terror,” he added, commending the US forces for the mission.

Prime Minister Masrour Barzani also welcomed the US-led raid and congratulated the American president for the successful mission.

US commandos raided the house of the ISIS leader, known by one of his monikers Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurayshi, in the northwestern Syrian province of Idlib early on Thursday. Al-Qurayshi blew himself up, killing several members of his family.

Having been the successor of ex-chief Abu Bakir al-Baghdadi since 2019, al-Qurayshi was previously one of the most trusted aides of the former ISIS head, who similarly detonated a suicide vest when US special forces raided his residence in the same Syrian province.

Born in Iraq’s Turkmen-majority Tal’afar district, al-Qurayshi was held in the US custody in the Camp Bucca in Basra following the toppling of former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein, to his arm the slain leader was a member.

Abdulla Qardash, another nom de guerre he was well-known for, had played a central role in numerous atrocities that ISIS committed in Iraq, including the genocide and enslavement of the Yezidi minority.
