ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – On Thursday, Kurdistan Region’s Minister of Interior Reber Ahmed received Claudio Cordone, Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General (Political) at UNAMI, Baghdad, Iraq.

They discussed the ongoing situation in Sinjar, and talked about the upcoming parliamentary elections in the Kurdistan Region.

In a post on his social account on X, Mr. Cordone announced that, besides discussing topics relevant to the circumstances surrounding the Sinjar area and the upcoming elections in the Kurdistan Region, “the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq remains ready to provide support.”

Erbil and Baghdad in September 2020 struck a deal to normalize the administrative and security situations in Sinjar. Per the agreement, all the armed groups, including the PKK, should leave the area and hand the security dossier to the local Yezidis.

The UN, the UK, and the US have expressed support for the implementation of the agreement.

On Feb. 21, the Federal Supreme Court of Iraq ruled to decrease the Kurdistan Region parliament seats from 111 to 100. Those eleven seats were dedicated to Kurdistan Region minorities.
