ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan24) – A Kurdish Peshmerga soldier named his son after the US President-elect Donald Trump after he expressed support to the Kurdish forces during the recent US presidential election.

Kurdistan24 correspondent Hoshmand Sadiq traveled to Shekhan town located in Duhok Province to visit the newborn called “Trump.”

The Kurdish Trump is less than 20-days-old. He is the son of a Kurdish Peshmerga soldier who had been fighting the Islamic State (IS) in the southern Kurdistan Region for two years.

The baby's uncle Karwan Jamil said naming him Trump was related to the US’ support to Peshmerga and the Kurdistan Region, adding his father was currently on the front lines.

He also mentioned President-elect Trump had expressed support to the Kurds during the election campaigns.

As a result, Jamil believed naming the newborn after Trump was a sign of respect for the US President-elect’s speeches.

The Kurdistan24 correspondent also went to the front line to interview the newborn’s father.

“The US is an important ally of the Kurdistan Region. I wanted to send a message to Trump by naming my son after him,” the father said.

“I want to tell Trump to continue supporting Peshmerga and help Kurds create an independent Kurdistan,” he continued.

In a 2015 interview about defeating IS, the President-elect said, “First of all the Kurds have to be brought into (sic), because they are good fighters and we treat them terribly. And they are the ones that really seem to be the ones that fight.”

“We [the US] do have some great fighters with the Kurds. And they are the ones that really do seem to be the fighters. And they know what they’re doing. But they don’t have the equipment. We’re giving our equipment to people that run every time a bullet gets fired,” he added.

Moreover, during the election campaign in Nashville, Tennessee, Trump was asked about the Kurds.

“The Kurdish people. We should be using the Kurdish. We should be arming the Kurdish. They’ve proven to be the best fighters. They’ve really proven to be the most loyal to us,” he stated.

“I didn’t know that Nashville had a large Kurdish population, but I will tell you that we should be using and utilizing those people. They have great heart. They are great fighters,” Trump added.

Additionally, in an interview with the New York Times, the President-elect said he was “a fan of the Kurds.”
