ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan24) – The Kurdistan Region President on Saturday received several US Army generals and commanders in Erbil.

Masoud Barzani, the President of the Kurdistan Region, welcomed US Army generals and commanders who played a role in the no-fly zone in the Kurdistan Region in 1991.

In late March 1991, nearly 1.5 million people from Kurdistan were displaced due to Saddam Hussein’s attacks on the Kurds.

On April 5, 1991, with the support of France and the US, the United Nations Security Council was urged to adopt the Resolution 688 to announce a no-fly zone over the Region.

The US Army delegation was headed by retired Lieutenant General Jay Garner who visited the Kurdistan Region on the 25th anniversary of the no-fly zone.

According to a statement by the Kurdistan Region Presidency (KRP), the US delegation expressed their admiration for the developments in the Kurdistan Region in the past 25 years.

“The delegation reaffirmed the need for the US and the new administration to take the role of the Kurdistan Region to defend the human values into consideration and shed light on the US-Kurdistan relations,” the KRP statement read.

The delegation also thanked the bravery and heroism of the people of Kurdistan and the Peshmerga forces in the battle against the Islamic State (IS).

President Barzani thanked the US delegation for their direct role in protecting the Region in 1991.

“With your help in creating a no-fly zone you had a big impact on changing the world perspective on the Kurdish issue,” the President stated.

Moreover, President Barzani updated the US Army delegates about the developments of the Mosul operation.

The President added the Kurdistan Peshmerga and Iraqi security forces in Mosul and surrounding areas had recorded good victories, while also stressing the need to protect the city’s components.
