MOSUL, Iraq (Kurdistan24) – As the Mosul offensive is ongoing, civilians continue to be the victims of the battle on the front lines.

While a Kurdistan24 crew was streaming live, revealing the living conditions of people in the newly liberated neighborhoods of Mosul including al-Quds and Karama, a group of young people were transferring a civilian’s dead body near the battlefield.

According to Kurdistan24 correspondent Masoud Mohammed in Mosul, civilians experienced very challenging conditions as the Islamic State (IS) continued to shell liberated areas randomly.

Moreover, Mohammed stated civilians were usually the main victims of bombardment from the insurgent group.

Additionally, Mohammed stated IS booby traps in the liberated areas had not been defused yet as the operation continued.

The United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) on Sunday reported that during the year 2016, about 20,000 civilians had been killed and injured in the country.

Iraqi and Kurdish Peshmerga forces launched the military operation to retake Mosul, the second-largest city in the country, on Oct. 17.

Since then, Iraqi forces have pushed the extremist group inside the city.

IS occupied Mosul in June 2014 and shortly expanded to other provinces in Iraq.

Since then, the militant group lost most of the territory it once controlled and continues to shrink.
