MOUNT ZARTEK, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan24) – Turkey’s Prime Minister Binali Yildirim accompanied by the Kurdistan Region’s President Masoud Barzani on Sunday visited a Peshmerga front line near the Islamic State (IS)-held city of Mosul.

Yildirim and President Barzani met with Peshmerga Generals based at Mount Zartik, some 30 kilometers (18 miles) east of Mosul which the Iraqi army is wrestling from IS since October 2016.

Their visit came following high-level meetings between members of the Kurdish and Turkish cabinets in Erbil.

Kurdish military officials showed the leaders areas liberated by Peshmerga forces on a map and informed them of the latest developments in the battle of Mosul.

Turkey initially demanded to join the operation in the face of objections from the Baghdad government.

The mountain overlooking part of the Nineveh Plains constitutes one of the last Kurdish-controlled frontiers with the rest of Iraq.
