WATCH: Kurds find home in Astana

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan24) – Within nearly half-a-century, Kazakhstan has become a homeland for hundreds of Kurdish families.

In Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan, nearly 1,000 Kurdish families, who according to one Kurd, live a decent life in the city.

On Jan. 23, Astana hosted a two-day conference on the Syrian peace talks.

The only Syrian Kurdish faction invited to the Astana talks was the Kurdish National Council (ENKS), an umbrella body based in Erbil, the capital of the Kurdistan Region.

The ENKS is made up of a few Syrian Kurdish political parties.

The Astana peace talks focused on extending the initial ceasefire in the war-torn country.

The discussions included representatives of the Syrian regime, opposition groups, the UN Special Envoy Staffan de Mistura, the US Ambassador to Kazakhstan George Krol, and representatives from Russia, Turkey, and Iran.
