WATCH: Iraqi forces confiscate 700 mortars, tons of phosphate in western Mosul

MOSUL, Iraq (Kurdistan24) – Iraqi security forces on Tuesday discovered hundreds of unprepared mortar rockets belonging to the Islamic State (IS) in western Mosul as well as tons of phosphate.

Chiman Adil, the Kurdistan24 correspondent embedded with Iraqi troops in Mosul, stated the forces in the neighborhood of al-Agidat were hunting the remaining IS extremists hiding in the area.

The troops discovered a house with at least 700 unprepared rockets stored in one of the rooms; an Iraqi military commander told Kurdistan24.

In addition to the rockets, there were tons of the chemical substance phosphate in another room where the insurgent group was filling the mortars with for explosive purposes.

The commander mentioned the Iraqi forces would not benefit from the confiscated materials for their military purposes, but rather they would detonate them at a designated location.

The ongoing military operation to liberate the west of Mosul from IS started on Feb. 19, 2017.

Although the offensive has been slow in the past weeks, the Iraqi forces have begun to free the liberated areas from explosive devices and booby-traps.
