Obama Envoy: Nothing can defeat Kurds when they are united

US Presidential Envoy for the anti-IS coalition, Brett McGurk, told reporters in a press briefing on Friday in Washington that the US wants to see Kurds united.

ERBIL (K24) - US Presidential Envoy for the anti-IS coalition, Brett McGurk, told reporters in a press briefing on Friday in Washington that the US wants to see Kurds united. A state, in which he said "nothing can defeat them" as seen in Kobani, referring to the historic cooperation between Peshmerga and YPG forces who defended the town.
In response to a question by a member of the press whether the US sets any conditions of "political reform to prevent rivalry between KDP and PUK" for military aid, Brett McGurk said that Obama administration gets concerned when it sees Kurds divided, "because this war is not over."
McGurk referred to the four months-long siege of the town of Kobani by the Islamic State group, the epic resistance of YPG/J fighters and the eventual united Kurdish & Coalition victory.

McGurk said in the briefing whose transcript was released on State Department website, that the US worked "very aggressively" with Turkey to open a corridor for the Peshmerga forces to join their Syrian brethren to prevent Kobani from falling to the IS. During the following months, Iraqi Kurdistan reinforced People's Protection Units (YPG) with Peshmerga soldiers, ammunition and weapons via Turkey.
"It was a moment in which the Kurds really united against this threat, and they dealt a decisive blow to ISIL," he said. He further remarked that "at one point we were down to just a few blocks in Kobani and a few hundred of the fighters in Kobani defending the town." Then, he said the US made a decision to help defenders of Kobani, with an ammunition airdrop and further military support.”
US President Barack Obama's envoy called on the Kurds who "are suffering martyrs every single day" to unite in the face of the enemy. He said political disagreements should be put aside during the war because there will be time for them.
McGurk also drew attention to the latest Kurdish and Coalition victories in Shingal (Sinjar) in South Kurdistan and Al Hawl in Rojava (Syrian Kurdistan) against the Islamic State group and said that those Kurdish advances are important in further isolating the group in the Syrian Raqqa and Iraqi Mosul cities.
