ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – The Kurdistan Region’s Interior Ministry on Friday announced that it had arrested those thieves who had robbed a gold shop in the city of Soran earlier this month.

Remarkably, they had used a long, underground tunnel to carry out their stunning theft.

The heist took place on the night of March 6, when a group of unknown individuals exploited the city’s sewer system. They used it as the basis for digging a 650-meter long tunnel in order to steal more than 38 kilograms of gold and US $300,000 from a local gold shop.

The shop, the Dargala Gold Jeweler, is located inside the bazaar in the city of Soran, which lies 70 km (44 miles) northeast of Erbil.

The Ministry of Interior, in a statement, announced that the robbers had been arrested in Erbil, the capital of the autonomous Kurdistan Region, along with the gold and the money that they had stolen.

The Ministry did not mention how many individuals had been involved in the robbery, nor did it provide any details about their identities. However, it said that further information would be made available to the public in the near future.

Hailing the efforts of the police and the security forces in the Kurdistan Region, the Ministry assured the people of the region that the criminals would be brought to justice in court and that no one can escape from the laws.

The heist is believed to be the largest robbery in the history of the autonomous region over the past decades.
