Kurdistan Region PM extends condolences on passing of Kuwaiti leader

Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani extended his condolences on the Tuesday passing of Kuwait's ruler in a statement released later in the day.

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani extended his condolences on the Tuesday passing of Kuwait's ruler in a statement released on social media later in the day.

“My deepest condolences to the family of Emir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, and all the people of Kuwait,” Barzani tweeted in the afternoon.

Sheikh Sabah, who led Kuwait since 2006, was 91 when his passing was announced by the national cabinet. The body then announced that Sheikh Sabah's 83-year-old brother, Crown Prince Sheikh Nawaf-al Sabah, would be the new head of state.

“The loss of his wise leadership, skill as a mediator and personal generosity will be felt throughout the region and around the world,” Prime Minister Barzani added.

In addition to the Gulf country's embassy in Baghdad, Kuwait maintains a consulate general in the Kurdistan Region's capital of Erbil. Kuwait and Kurdistan Region enjoy an active diplomatic relationship.

Sheikh Sabah had “a strong, friendly relationship with Kurdistan Region,” Barzani continued.

The Kuwati leader served as his nation’s foreign minister for 40 years before becoming the monarchical state’s prime minister. Following his premiership, he became the leader of the oil-rich nation.

In July, the Sheikh Sabah was admitted in the United States to undergo surgery.
