ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani on Thursday congratulated Christians in Kurdistan, Iraq, and the world celebrating Christmas.

In a statement released on the KRG website, Prime Minister Barzani congratulated “our Christian brothers and sisters in Kurdistan, Iraq and the world,” wishing them a calm and joyful holiday season.

“Christians are an important and indigenous component of Kurdish society, and they played an important role in the advancement of Kurdish society and the region along with other components,” Barzani added, describing the Kurdistan Region as “a haven of ethnic and religious coexistence in the region.”

“On this merry occasion, we reiterate our commitment to strengthening a culture of tolerance, harmony, and peaceful coexistence between various components, a pride of the Kurdistan Region.”

Barzani concluded his statement by expressing his hope that Christmas and the coming new year pave the way for “enduring peace, and an end to the crises of the Kurdistan Region and the world.”

Christians in the autonomous Kurdistan Region spend Christmas eve with celebrations and group gatherings. However, like so many other traditions, the outbreak of the coronavirus disease and the lockdown measures to curb it, celebrations would either be halted or limited.

The Kurdistan Region’s interior ministry on Thursday issued new regulations for citizens ahead of Christmas eve. The latest measures, among others, restrict travel to and from several countries, amid fears of a new, more infectious coronavirus strand.
