ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – The United States welcomed the first session of Iraq’s parliament on Sunday and called for the swift formation of a new Iraqi government.

In a statement, the US embassy in Baghdad extended its “warmest congratulations” to the Speaker of the House of Representatives Mohammed al-Halbousi, and his two deputies, Hakim al-Zamly (from the Sadrist bloc) and Shakhawan Abdullah (from the Kurdistan Democratic Party), who were elected to their positions by parliament on Sunday.

“We hope that the Iraqi leadership and the new parliament will speed up the process of forming a new government,” the statement added.

The embassy also expressed its hope that the new Iraqi government will reflect the will of the Iraqi people and resolve the problems of government, economy, human rights, and security in the country.

Halbousi was reelected to the position of speaker for a second term, a first in the history of Iraq’s parliament.

Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani spoke with Halbousi and congratulated him on his reelection.

“I look forward to continuing to work closely with him for all the country and Erbil-Baghdad ties in particular,” Barzani said.
