ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Iraq’s Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi arrived at Qayyarah airbase in Nineveh province on Wednesday and met with Iraqi Army commanders to discuss security plans on the Iraq-Syria border.

His visit comes amidst an ISIS attack on a prison housing several imprisoned members of the group in the northeastern Syrian city of Hasakah. That attack sparked fears that ISIS might attempt to infiltrate Iraq from Syria.

“I’m personally following the developments on a daily basis, and I fully trusty your abilities to protect Iraq and the Iraqis,” Al-Kadhimi told the Iraqi commanders at Qayyarah. “I tell the ISIS terrorists, don’t try us because you will fail.”

“You know very well that we are chasing after you inside and outside Iraq,” he added. “You will pay for whatever stupidity you have committed.”

According to Kurdistan 24 correspondent in the province, the prime minister plans to visit the Sinjar district, home to the Yezidi minority persecuted by ISIS.

Qayyarah is located near the Tigris River in Nineveh province. ISIS previously captured the airbase after it overran large swathes of northern Iraq in 2014 and used it to make bombs.
