ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – The Twitter account of the Combined Joint Task Force – Operation Inherent Resolve (CJTF-OIR), the official name for the coalition, paid tribute on Tuesday to the 121 Kurdish-led fighters, civilians, and detention facility staff that were killed during the brutal ISIS attack on Sina’a prison in the northeastern Syrian city of Hasakah.

“We pay tribute to the SDF (Syrian Democratic Forces) fighters, civilians, and detention facility staff who were martyred in Hasakah,” the coalition said.

“The SDF’s bravery and determination ensured Daesh’s (ISIS) desperate attack on the detention facility failed,” it added.

“We stand in solidarity with our SDF partners.”

The General Command of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in a statement on Monday said that during the ISIS attack, “the Daesh (ISIS) terrorist detainees inside the prison brutally killed 77 martyrs of the prison staff and guards.”

“In the 7-day-long clashes outside the prison, 40 of our fighters and 4 civilians were martyred.”

The SDF said in total 121 of “our fighters and prison staff were heroically martyred.”

ISIS launched its attack on al-Sina'a prison, which holds 3,000 to 3,500 suspected terrorists, with an explosive-laden car on Jan. 20 as detainees rioted inside.

The SDF and US-led coalition on Sunday announced that the prison was completely recaptured following the surrender of the remaining ISIS fighters.

In a tweet on Tuesday, SDF Commander-in-Chief Mazloum Abdi said he was saddened to watch the convoys of “121 martyrs of our children, heading to most cities and towns in northeast Syria.”

“The well-established truth is that they are our heroes, lovers of freedom, fathers and children, Kurds and Arabs,” he said. Our pride and pride for the free world. To sanctify their name, and to commemorate the martyrs together.”

On Monday, the bodies of 12 SDF fighters arrived in the city of Kobani, the city known for its legendary resistance against ISIS in late 2014.

Kurdish forces backed by the US-led coalition liberated Kobani on Jan. 26, 2015. Since then, the liberation anniversary has been celebrated every year by Kurds in the region.

Both the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria and Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) President Masoud Barzani congratulated the people of northeast Syria on the seventh anniversary of the liberation of Kobani last week.

After the ISIS attack in Hasakah on Jan. 20, the Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani expressed his concern about the increase in the number of ISIS terrorist attacks in Iraq and northeast Syria.

“I have directed Ministers of Peshmerga and Interior, and security services, to strengthen defensive lines and measures necessary to protect the people of the Kurdistan Region,” he said.
