ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Hakim al-Zamili, the first deputy of the Iraqi parliament speaker, said on Tuesday that the United Nations and European Union missions are vital partners in the success of Iraq’s democratic and electoral process.

Al-Zamili’s made the remark during his meeting with a delegation of the European Union Observation Mission to Iraq headed by chief observer Viola von Cramon-Taubadel in Baghdad, according to a press release from his office.

On Sunday, the mission issued its final report on the Oct. 10, 2021 elections, which was also monitored by another mission from the United Nations.

In addition to considering the two missions “key partners” in Iraq’s democratization efforts, the Iraqi official called for fostering relations with the international organizations.

The EU mission presented a number of recommendations to the Iraqi authorities in its final report aimed at strengthening the electoral process. Al-Zamili said Iraq should benefit from those suggestions, according to the press release.

The European delegation presented a version of the final report to the Iraqi official.

Four months after the parliamentary elections and Iraq’s political factions haven’t been able to form a government, with the biggest winners calling for a new majority government and their rivals insisting on another consensus-based government.
