Iraqi Parliament announces requirements for running for country's presidency

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – The Iraqi Parliament on Sunday outlined the requirements needed to run for the Iraqi presidency a day after it voted to reopen the door for new candidates.

Parliament voted during Saturday’s session to reopen the door for presidential candidates.

In a statement, the parliament called on those who wish to run to submit their written applications accompanied by official documents proving that they meet the conditions outlined by the parliament presidency and hand them over to the legal department of the House of Representatives during official work hours.

Hopeful candidates have a three-day period to submit their applications as of Monday. 

To be eligible to compete, candidates must be Iraqi by birth and of Iraqi parents, be fully qualified for the position, and be over 40-years-old. Eligible candidates are also expected to have political experience and be known for their integrity, uprightness, and loyal to their homeland. 

Academically, eligible candidates also require a university degree recognized by the Iraqi Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research.
