ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) President Masoud Barzani on Tuesday praised the Kurdistan Region’s women as “valiant and paramount” on the occasion of International Women’s Day.

“Please allow me to highlight my sincere acknowledgment of the valiant and paramount role of the women of Kurdistan during our struggle,” President Masoud Barzani said.

Barzani’s party established the Kurdistan Women Union in 1952 to promote female participation in politics during the Kurdish nation’s struggle for cultural and political recognition in Iraq.

Numerous female Kurdish leaders had taken part in the nation’s armed struggles with former Iraqi regimes, including Leyla Qassim, who was infamously executed by the Baathist regime in Baghdad in 1974 for her political activism.

The Kurdistan Region has long been supportive and open towards women’s rights.

The Region’s Parliament Speaker is a woman, and the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has three female ministers.

Having been officially adopted as an international day by the United Nations in the mid-1970s, International Women’s Day is celebrated annually on March 8 to celebrate women’s achievements in various fields and raise awareness of gender inequality.
