ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has not been a factor in the delayed and unpaid salaries of the Kurdish teachers, said Prime Minister Masrour Barzani on Wednesday.

Barzani’s remarks came during the inauguration of Majidi Primary School and Kindergarten in Erbil, where he had visited the newly built educational facilities and met the students.

Thanking those teachers who have been able to continue teaching their students despite the “difficulties,” Barzani expressed support for the teachers who have called for securing their rights.

“We should direct our criticism at the entity that is responsible for cutting or delaying their salaries,” Barzani said, adding his government is a not factor in the issue.

Instead of paying the Kurdistan Region’s share in the federal budget, the Iraqi government has transferred funds in loans to the KRG in order to be able to pay the civil servants, resulting in delayed payments, according to Kurdish officials.

Barzani called on the political parties to stand with the KRG in demanding the rights of teachers and all the Kurdistan Region people from the entity that had violated the rights.

The premier reiterated the government's stance that the teachers will be compensated, adding what cannot be compensated is the Kurdistan Region's "experience and education of children".

Barzani toured the school and kindergarten, where he met with pupils and educators. He extended his appreciation for the "excellent work" done by the Kurdish investor and tycoon Ahmad Qadir Majidi.

The official also highlighted the reform that has been undertaken in the education sector, thanking its Minister Alan Hama Saeed for the success. He pledged that the KRG would continue investing in the education sector.
