Kurdish woman selected for the BBC 100 Women 2023 list

Basima Abdulrahman, a Baghdad-born Kurd, and founder of KESK, was selected by the BBC for the news corporation's BBC 100 2023 list.

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Basima Abdulrahman, a Baghdad-born Kurd, was selected for the BBC 100 Women 2023 list.

Abdulrahman is the founder of KESK (meaning “green” in Kurdish), an environmental solutions company that provides green building design and renewable energy solutions.

100 Women is a BBC annual series established in 2013 that examines the role of women in the 21st century. This year, Ms. Abdulrahman was included in the BBC list of 100 inspiring and influential women from around the world for 2023.

Among previous selectees to the list are attorney and former US First Lady Michelle Obama, human rights lawyer Amal Clooney, Ballon d'Or-winning footballer Aitana Bonmatí, AI expert Timnit Gebru, feminist icon Gloria Steinem, Hollywood star America Ferrera and beauty mogul Huda Kattan.

The BBC wrote that Abdulrahman is “committed to ensuring that today's building practices do not compromise the well-being of future generations.”

"To be selected as one of the BBC 100 women for 2023 is an immense honor, a great recognition, and an empowering experience,” Ms. Abdulrahman told Kurdistan 24. 

“It signifies that my voice carries weight, my story ignites inspiration, and my work sparks transformative change. It is a reminder that we as Kurds can contribute to shaping a brighter future for all.”

She has also been a board member of the World Economic Forum, and participated in Oct. 2023 in the annual meeting of the World Bank in Marrakech.

She is also the 2021 Cartier Women's Initiative laureate in the Middle East.
