ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) Vice President Masrour Barzani on Monday extended his congratulations to the members of the Kurdistan Women Union on the occasion of its 71st anniversary.

“I extend my warmest congratulations to the secretary, members of the secretary's office, and all Kurdistan Region women on the 71st anniversary of the Union,” Barzani wrote in a statement, wishing them success and prosperity in their endeavors.

The KDP official highlighted the Union’s “remarkable and important role” in the Kurdish liberation movement and educating “capable female leaders.”

Barzani reiterated his government’s commitment to the protection of women’s rights and empowerment in governance as well as building their capacity.

The Union was established by a group of Kurdish women in Sulaimani on Dec. 11, 1952, in Sulaimani under the supervision of the late Mullah Mustafa Barzani.

The organization played a remarkable role in the Kurdish revolutionary movement in the following years, according to the party officials.

The foundation of the union is “indicative of the KDP and immortal Barzani’s belief in equality” as well as the Kurdish women’s self-confidence and awareness in the history of the nation, Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani said on the anniversary last year.

Marking the beginning of the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-based Violence (GBV), Prime Minister Barzani in late November reiterated his cabinet’s commitment to the fight against violence against women.
