ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ Al-Sudani on Monday discussed preparations for the Kurdistan Region’s sixth parliamentary elections set for Feb. 2024 with a senior Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) delegation in Baghdad, according to a statement.

KRG Ministers of Interior Reber Ahmed and Finance and Economy Awat Sheikh Janab met with the Iraqi premier in Baghdad as part of their visit to the Iraqi capital to discuss the issue of customs policy and amending its law.

The officials discussed the “ongoing preparations for the Kurdistan Regional Parliament elections in February of next year were also discussed,” a statement from the premier’s office read.

They also highlighted other issues, including security, financial, and economic matters, the press release added.

Due to political infighting, the Kurdistan Region parties could not agree on amending the election law last year, triggering the extension of the current Kurdistan Parliament term by a year.

Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani set Feb. 25, 2024, as the date for the sixth parliamentary elections.

The upcoming election is going to be administered by the Iraqi Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) after the Kurdish electoral body’s mandate has expired.

The KRG has taken several legal and financial measures to hold the elections and maintained cooperation with the Iraqi Electoral Commission for the same purpose, Abdul Hakeem Khasraw, the head of the government’s Coordination and Follow-Up Department, told Kurdistan 24 in early November.
