Kuwaiti emir dies aged 86, announces royal court

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – The Kuwaiti Emir Sheikh Nawaf Al Ahmad Al-Sabah died at the age of 86, the royal court announced on Saturday.

“With great sadness and sorrow, we — the Kuwaiti people, the Arab and Islamic nations, and the friendly peoples of the world — mourn the late His Highness the Emir Sheikh Nawaf Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah, who passed away to his Lord today,” Sheikh Mohammed Abdullah Al Sabah, the minister at the royal court, read the statement.

The minister did not elaborate on the cause of his death.

The Kuwaiti emir was admitted to hospital in late November, the court announced at the time, citing an “emergency health problem” without elaborating further on the condition.

The late ruler reportedly visited the US in March 2021 for medical checks.

Sheikh Nawaf was sworn in as emir after his half-brother, the late Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Sabah, passed away at the age of 91.
