IHEC delegation to visit Erbil to discuss setting new election date

The IHEC has recently announced that it cannot hold the polls on the set date due to a pending lawsuit against the Region’s electoral law at the Iraqi Federal Supreme Court.

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – An Iraqi Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) delegation is set to visit the Kurdish capital Erbil on Monday to set a new date for the Kurdistan Region parliamentary election, according to a spokesperson.

The delegation will be headed by IHEC President Omer Ahmed and will meet with the Region’s officials to discuss preparations and set a new date for its sixth parliamentary election, which was supposed to be held on Feb. 25 this year, Joumana Ghallay, the commission’s spokesperson, told Kurdistan24.

The IHEC has recently announced that it cannot hold the polls on the set date due to a pending lawsuit against the Region’s electoral laws at the Iraqi Federal Supreme Court.

The lawsuit rejects the single-consistency model and the quota seats of religious and ethnic components. The Court has adjourned the session to late Jan. 2024.

Setting a new date for the parliamentary election is within the jurisdiction of the Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani, the IHEC president previously said.

Following a one-year delay to the election, the Kurdish president in August set Feb. 25, 2024, as the new date for the election.

In the absence of an active Kurdistan electoral mission mandate, the Iraqi Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) has the authority to organize the parliamentary elections.
