IHEC Forms Security Committee for Kurdistan Region's Parliamentary Elections

The spokesperson also added that the process of registration and renewal of voter registration will continue until tomorrow (March 10, 2024) and citizens can visit the nearest commission center to register their information.

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – On Saturday, the Iraqi Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) spokesperson Joumana Ghallay informed Kurdistan24 that, “following the decision of the Kurdistan Region’s Ministry of Interior, a high-level security committee has been formed for the upcoming parliamentary elections in the Kurdistan Region. Justice Amer Musa Al-Husseini will act as representative of IHEC in this committee.”

As Ghallay mentioned, the security committee will have the following responsibilities:

- Protecting the security and independence of the Kurdistan parliamentary elections.

- Protecting voters and polling stations until the completion of the election.

- Facilitating the process of the elections to guarantee a smooth process.

- Protection of warehouses, equipment and supplies related to the voting process.

- Protecting the process of transferring ballot boxes to the provincial election centers.

The spokesperson also added that the process of registration and renewal of voter registration will continue until tomorrow (March 10, 2024) and citizens can visit the nearest commission center to register their information.

Earlier, the spokesman of the Iraqi Independent High Election Commission told Kurdistan24 that from December 1 to March 6, 2024, 10810 biometric cards have been distributed in the Kurdistan Region.

During the same period, 109018 people registered in the biometric registration, including 54199 people in Erbil, 24347 people in Duhok and 30 472 people in Sulaimani.

Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani signed a decree on March 3 setting the date for the upcoming parliamentary elections, according to a readout from the Kurdistan Region Presidency.

“In accordance with the second paragraph of Article 10 of the Presidency Law No. 1 of 2005, as amended, President Nechirvan Barzani has decided that the general elections for the sixth term of the Kurdistan Parliament will take place on June 10th, 2024,” the statement read.

According to the decree, all relevant parties are required to collaborate with the Independent High Electoral Commission to ensure the smooth implementation of this decision.
