410 affected families from Zakho flash flood received compensation, says top official

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – Gohdar Shekho, the supervisor of the Zakho Independent Administration, announced during a press conference on Saturday that there were no casualties resulting from the flash floods in Zakho. Furthermore, he stated that 410 affected families had already received compensation.

"I would like to express my gratitude to President [Masoud] Barzani for swiftly assisting the people of Zakho. Thankfully, the rescue teams were promptly prepared for the onset of the floods," the supervisor said.

Shekho also added that there were no casualties in the floods in Zakho. “However, there was significant material damage, including houses and shops.”

“In the first phase, a total of 410 affected families in Zakho were compensated based on President Barzani's recommendation. Furthermore, it has been decided that 133 shops and tourist attractions will be compensated in the second phase, prior to the holidays,” he noted.

Moreover, the official revealed that the commander of the Peshmerga, Gulan's 1st special forces, Mansour Barzani, visited all the flash flood victims on the recommendation of Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) President Masoud Barzani. “He promised that all of them would be compensated.”

Shekho stated that 80 percent of Zakho had been cleared of flood debris. He emphasized that this was the first time Zakho experienced such heavy rainfall, catching everyone off guard and causing the floods.
