ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – ISIS militants on Friday attacked an Iraqi army checkpoint in Kirkuk, resulting in killing a soldier and injuring another.

An Iraqi army colonel told Kurdistan24 that five ISIS fighters carried out the attack in Kharashchi, a village located in Daquq district in the southeast of Kirkuk.

According to the source, the attack targeted the first battalion of the 44th Brigade of the Iraqi Army.

The source also said the Iraqi army had launched a search operation in the area.

ISIS occupied approximately one-third of Iraq for nearly three years, including its second-largest city Mosul.

Since the group's self-styled caliphate was destroyed by Kurdish, Iraqi, and international forces, it has regrouped in remote parts of the country. It continues to carry out hit-and-run attacks against security forces and civilians.

The Kurdistan Region's Peshmerga forces regularly conduct joint operations with Iraqi forces against ISIS in the so-called "disputed territories" between Erbil and Baghdad, where the group is most active.
