ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – During his meeting with EU Ambassador to Iraq, Thomas Seiler, on Wednesday Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) President Masoud Barzani said that the KDP has played a crucial role in promoting democracy and organizing elections since the Kurdish uprising in 1991, according to a statement from Barzani Headquarters.

The focus of the meeting was on the political situation in Iraq and the parliamentary elections in the Kurdistan Region.

KDP President Masoud Barzani emphasized that the KDP has consistently advocated for parliamentary elections, and now urges prompt resolution of the technical issues impeding the proper conduct of elections. He urged the United Nations to ensure fair elections, for the results to accurately represent the voice and will of the Kurdish people.

KDP President Barzani expressed his gratitude to the international community and the UN for their support and for taking the concerns of the KDP seriously. President Barzani emphasized that it would not be possible to hold a free and fair election on the currently scheduled date.

“However, there has been some progress in the parties collaborating to address the issues, and it is clear that more time is needed to resolve these problems fully. Therefore, the postponement of the elections for a few months is of the utmost importance to protect the rights of voters and communities from being violated,” the statement read.

The EU Ambassador to Iraq expressed his appreciation for the significant role played by KDP President Barzani in promoting political progress and stability in both Iraq and the Kurdistan Region. The Ambassador emphasized the EU's serious consideration of the KDP's input on the technical aspects of the elections. He made it clear that both the EU and the UN believe that elections cannot be considered democratic and successful without the participation of a “major party” such as the KDP.
