French President Macron deploys air defense system in Erbil to safeguard troops, allies

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) - Speaking to the press during a European Council meeting in Brussels, Belgium, 18 April, French President Emmanuel Macron has announced the deployment of a missile defense system in Erbil, underscoring its role in protecting French soldiers and allies in the region.

During his address on Thursday (April 18, 2024), President Macron reiterated France's commitment to supporting the Peshmerga forces, emphasizing the importance of regional security for both French forces and their allies.

"As for Erbil and Kurdistan, you know much attached we are to the security of our armed forces but as well to the security of our key partners in the whole region," Macron told Kurdistan24 correspondent Barzan Hassan.

Addressing concerns regarding the absence of the Patriot system in Erbil, Macron assured the public that necessary adaptations have been made to ensure effective defense measures.

"We remain committed and we do have our own defense system being deployed there; we don’t have the patriot system, but we have adapted our own system being deployed with our soldiers and special forces," he stated.

Macron further emphasized the deployment of French systems alongside soldiers and special forces, highlighting their role in protecting both capabilities and alliances in the region.

President Macron reiterated France’s commitment to safeguard its allies in the region, stating these measures are to “secure our own capacities but also to secure our friends.”
