KRG calls on Baghdad to end retaliatory measures after Federal Court ruling

“The people of Kurdistan, with all its components, agree on protecting the constitutional entity of the Kurdistan Region."

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan 24) – The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) calls on the Iraqi Federal Government to cancel all punitive measures taken against the Kurdistan Region following the Federal Court ruling.

The KRG spokesperson, Safeen Dizayee, in a statement on Thursday said that following the Federal Supreme Court ruling on the Kurdistan Region’s referendum, Baghdad has to end all measures against the people of the Kurdistan Region and the Region itself.

Dizayee stated that “Based on the ruling of the Federal Court ruling on Nov. 20, all unjust measures taken against the Kurdistan Region by the Iraqi government and parliament should be canceled.”

In the statement, Dizayee called for canceling the reduction of the Kurdistan Region budget share, punishing the representatives of the Region in the Iraqi parliament, closure of airports and all other decisions taken against the people.

In regard to paying the salaries of civil servants in the Region by Baghdad, Dizayee said that the Iraqi government is not willing to pay the salaries although the KRG has expressed readiness for facilitation and cooperation, Baghdad has refused to accept KRG’s biometric system.

The KRG also expressed concern over Abadi referring to the Kurdistan Region as northern Iraq governorates, stating that “Using a fabricated word is a clear violation of the Constitution and we reject it.”

“The people of Kurdistan, with all its components, agree on protecting the constitutional entity of the Kurdistan Region and can never compromise on that regard,” the statement concluded.
