Kurdistan Referendum Council: Vote will not be postponed

The Kurdistan Region’s High Council of Independence Referendum has reiterated that the referendum scheduled for Sep. 25 will be held on time.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan 24) – The Kurdistan Region’s High Council of Independence Referendum has reiterated that the referendum scheduled for Sep. 25 will be held on time.

The High Referendum Council, headed by the Kurdistan Region President Masoud Barzani, held a meeting on Thursday in Erbil to discuss the alternative presented by the international community that called for the postponement of the independence referendum.

In a statement released by the council on Thursday, it is stated that the meeting decided to hold the independence referendum on time with keeping the door of dialogue with Baghdad open.

“A viable alternative to replace the set date for referendum has not been made available yet and there is not much time for it, therefore, without a guaranteed independence for Kurdistan, the referendum will not be postponed,” the statement said.

“To update Baghdad with the latest position of the delegation, the High Council of Referendum will visit Baghdad on Sep. 23,” the statement added.

The council has decided to publish the projects of the rights of the Kurdistan Region’s components and announce the general principles of the independent state of Kurdistan before Sep. 25.
