Rocket attacks violation against Kurdistan Region’s people, allies: President Nechirvan Barzani

Wednesday’s rocket attacks on the Kurdistan Region’s capital Erbil are a violation against the region’s people and their allies in the fight on terror, Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani said in a statement a day after the attack.

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Wednesday’s rocket attacks on the Kurdistan Region’s capital Erbil are a violation against the region’s people and their allies in the fight on terror, Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani said in a statement a day after the attack.

On Wednesday evening, six rockets were launched toward Erbil International Airport, where the US-led coalition forces are stationed, without causing any casualties or damages as they landed in a remote area.

The attacks are a “violation on the people of the Kurdistan Region and their allies in the fight against terror,” President Barzani said in a statement, calling on all the Iraqi forces, including the Peshmerga forces, Iraqi Army, and Popular Mobilization Force (PMF), to “unify efforts” to thwart similar destructive attacks from such groups.

The rockets did not reach the coalition base, its spokesperson announced, as he described the attack as an “indirect fire” aimed at their forces.

The attackers are “the enemies of all Iraq,” and they have to be confronted by all the Iraqi forces, President Barzani added, as he expressed the region’s readiness to coordinate with Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi in this regard.

Following the attack, Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani announced that the region would “not tolerate any attempt to undermine Kurdistan’s stability,” and the response to the attack would be “robust,” after he had a phone conversation with his Iraqi counterpart.

The Kurdistan Region’s Ministry of Interior issued a statement, in which it revealed the location the rockets came from.

“The rockets were fired from a pickup truck at the Bartella region between the Sheikh Amir and Tarjalah villages [in Nineveh Plain],” which, the statement explained, are under the control of the 30th Brigade of the PMF, known in Arabic as the Hashd al-Shaabi.
