ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani condemned the latest ISIS attack on the Iraqi Army in a phone call with Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi on Friday night.

“I’m deeply troubled by the continued ISIS terrorist activities in the country,” the prime minister said in a tweet.

“Tonight, I have spoken with PM @MAKadhimi to condemn the recent attack on the Iraqi Army and convey my sympathies to the Iraqi people.”

“PM @MAKadhimi and I agreed that the recent attacks, including on the Peshmerga, are a solemn reminder of the threat the terror group still poses against us all,” he added.

ISIS militants attacked an army barracks in a mountainous area north of Baghdad early Friday, killing 11 soldiers as they slept, AP reported.

Despite Iraq declaring victory over the extremist group in December 2017, the fight to eradicate ISIS from the country continues.

The terror group often launches attacks in previously liberated areas, especially in territories disputed between Baghdad and Erbil.

Anti-ISIS operations and cooperation between the Iraqi Army and the Kurdish Peshmerga markedly increased in the disputed territories since late November, following the killing of 23 Peshmerga fighters and civilians in multiple ISIS attacks there.
